Senior Platform Engineer
£70,000 plus great benefits (Work Level 5)
UK Remote
This is a UK remote first role, with an option to work from our Manchester office for those who want to. You may be asked to occasionally attend meetings in Manchester (find out more about our hybrid working policy at colleagues.coop.co.uk/hybrid-working-policy).
Please be aware Co-op does not offer visa sponsorship for this opportunity
We’re looking for a Senior Platform Engineer to join our wider Digital Technology & Data team at Co-op. In this role, you’ll support the development of our food stores by exploring AI-driven automation to improve our checkout experience and helping build a platform that delivers notifications to store colleagues across the UK.
If you’ve got experience designing and supporting cloud environments, this could be an ideal opportunity for you. Due to the commercial sensitivity of our services, security is a top priority, and we embrace automation to reduce risk and focus on other work – commonly referred to as DevOps.
Our core technical environment is Azure, managed with Terraform (though we’re open to cross-training someone with experience in other platforms and tools). We have a thriving cloud platform community at Co-op, and we work within product delivery teams; sharing expertise and supporting each other.
What you’ll do
- Provide platform engineering expertise to two of our Engineering teams
- Design, implement, and support cloud tooling and environments, automating where possible
- Create clear documentation and examples to guide and assist users of our systems
- Collaborate with colleagues across Co-op and with external partners
- Support our software engineers in developing their platform engineering skills
This role would suit people who have
- Experience with Cloud-based infrastructure and platform engineering practices (e.g., IaC, CI/CD)
- Experience operating live environments, including telemetry and automated deployment
- A solid understanding of cloud vendor services, distributed systems, and networking concepts
- Good communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and accessibly
- Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work in pairs and ensembles
We know that some people are less likely to apply for a role if they don’t meet all the criteria in the job description. At Co-op, we're committed to building a diverse and inclusive working environment, so if you'd like to apply for this role but your experience doesn't quite meet every point, we'd still encourage you to apply. You may be just the right candidate for the job or other roles we have available.
We’re also open to applications from people who may require flexible working arrangements. There’ll be an opportunity to discuss your flexible working requirements during the interview process, and at offer stage.
Why Co-op?
As a Co-op colleague, we can offer you a competitive salary and great benefits package which includes 30% off Co-op branded products in our food stores (as well as other discounts on Co-op products and services). You’ll also get:
- Private healthcare
- An annual bonus (based on personal and business performance)
- 28 days holiday (rising to 32 with service) plus bank holidays
- A pension with up to 10% employer contributions
- Access to a subsidised onsite gym (at our Manchester HQ)
- Coaching and training to support your career development
- Wagestream – a money management app that gives you access to a percentage of your pay as you earn it
- Grocery Aid – 24/7 access to a range of emotional, financial, and practical support services for you and your family

We'll ask whether you’d like to be considered under the Disability Confident scheme when you apply.
If we invite you to take part in the recruitment process for any of our jobs, we’ll ask you if you need any reasonable adjustments to enable you to participate.
